History

Shiba Inu originated from Japan. The word nu’ means shrubs woods in Japanese; however, the name Shiba has a less certain origin. This breed may have been named Inu because it was used to hunting small game, like rabbits and birds. The breed has become very popular in Japan, but between the years 1912 to 1926, the breed almost went into extinction. Researchers endeavoured to conserve it, though the Second World War hampered their efforts. However, they found some remnants and went ahead and produced other breeds from them.

General Appearance of Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu are easily recognisable by their distinctive eyes, fox-like face and long tail. Their long fur or hair protects them during winter. When it is sleeping, it curls and covers the sensitive part of its body (like its mouth and eyes) with its hairy tail. The colour of its coat varies; it may be: red, grey, black-tan, sesame and a few instances of white.

An average male weighs approximately 10.5 kg and 8kg for females. Generally, Shiba Inu has a compact, well-built body. An average male height measures between 35 to 43 cm and 33cm to 41 in females.

General Characteristics of Shiba Inu Puppies

Shiba Inu is an intelligent puppy. It learns quickly, but you do need to train it from a young age. Sometimes it is rebellious, especially for second owners. It requires a big room to romp because it is very energetic, and can be aggressive if not afforded a reasonable outlet.

It will chase and flush small animals like rabbits, cats and hens. It is wise to always keep a close eye on it. They are very possessive over what they consider to be ‘theirs’. They will rebel if you take toys, food, or ‘territory’ away from them.

Different Types of Shiba Inu Breed

Shiba Inu has various breeds as a result of cross-breeding. Breeds include: Shiba Inu husky mix, corgi Shiba Inu mix puppies, Shiba Inu mix breeds, Shiba Inu mixed with chow, and finally Shiba Inu mixed with lab. We are going to look at each one of them in detail.

Shiba Inu Husky Mix

Shiba Inu Husky mix, or Husky Inu for short, is a crossbreed between Siberian Husky and Shiba Inu. While Shiba Inu is known for its fox-like appearance, Siberian Husky looks like a wolf. When you mix these two the results are phenomenal. It weighs around 18 to 30 pounds on average. It is muscular, well compact and has strong, developed bones. Their coat colour varies, but mostly they are black and white, and their tails are long with long fur. It is very possessive, especially of its toys and food. It is also very active, and it needs a big compound to keep fit physically and mentally. The fur sheds often, and they require constant maintenance.

Shibu Inu Jack Russel Mix

Shibu Inu Mix is a crossbreed between Shibu Inu and Jack Russell Terrier, from Britain. It is loving, independent, and intelligent. Jack Russell Terrier, on the other hand, is a little bigger physically that Shiba Inu; and it is also very intelligent with unconditional love for its owner. When you combine these two breeds, you come up with an intelligent, high spirited and strong dog. Its body is well packed with strong bones. The puppy’s character is fascinating – sometimes it is conservative and laid back, while other times it can be very aggressive. A fully matured male weighs between 10 to 15 pounds, and measures 12 to 15 inches across the shoulders, with females being somewhat smaller.

Shiba Inu Mixed with Chow

This breed is the result of cross-breeding between Shiba Inu and Chow Chow. Chow Chow is known for its firmness and lion-like appearance. Both are indigenous breeds. Shiba Inu mixed with chow is known particularly for its stubbornness.

This breed is very aggressive and does not like to play. It is not recommended in homes with little kids or other dogs. A typical Shibu Inu mixed with chow weighs between 35- 30 pounds, and it is 14- 17 inches in height. It is suitable for security and chasing other dogs, but we do not recommend it for first time owners.

Shiba Inu Mixed With Lab

Famously known as “Shibadors”, it is a crossbreed between Shiba Inu and Labrador Retriever. These are two different breeds – while Shiba Inu weighs less than 30 pounds, Labrador Retriever can weigh up to 100 pounds. Shiba Inu was initially used to hunt, while Labrador Retriever was bred to flush out prey and to retrieve ducks. Labs are amongst the friendliest breeds, and they enjoy plenty of attention. When you mix this character with that of a typical Shiba Inu, you get a dog with intelligence, a physical and well-packed body, as well as a high spirited demeanour. They weigh from 30 to 50 pounds, and their coat colour vary from brown, red, and grey, black and white. Their ears may be long and floppy, while a few have erect ones. You should consider buying one if you enjoy jogging, walking and daily trips, because its physicality and agility demand regular exercise.

Final thoughts…

Puppies may differ in breed because of their genes, but the way you bring them up will dictate much of their traits and habits. Puppies need to be coached and trained as early as possible so that they can have a good character and an energetic personality. If you are looking for a healthy and vibrant puppy or dog, you may need to check the reputation of the puppy breeder first. Experts recommend buying from a reputable breeder, who will be able to run tests on the dog to ensure it does not carry any genetic or communicable diseases.

Temperament and Behavior

Being loving, friendly, and faithful by nature, it enjoys human attention and loves to spend time with its family. This family pet is good with small kids as well as other pets, acting as a great playmate. However, the dog may show anxiety and shyness around strangers, which can be taken care of by properly training your pet in its puppyhood. Predominantly a sweet-natured dog, it may sometimes exhibit signs of aggression, especially if it is scared. Due to its active and alert disposition, it does a great job as a watchdog alerting its owners. They have a keen sense of smell and sniff a lot to follow the source of the scent.

Training

Because of its high intelligence, the jackabee is capable of learning the commands quickly. However, its stubborn and independent nature is hard to deal with, requiring firm, patient, and consistent training methods. Since it has an inherent hunting instinct, introducing the puppies to obedience training methods as well as establishing authority over them is essential. Socialization and potty training are equally essential to curb any unwanted behavior in the future.

Feeding

Provide it with one and a half to two cups of preservative-free, organic dry kibble regularly. Few occasional treats such as baby carrots, sweet potato chews, and other snacks, including tuna and salmon, can be added to its diet. But be sure to check its daily calorie intake.

Interesting Facts

  • Agile and alert, the Jackabee performs well in tasks like hunting, sighting, and showing tricks.
  • It easily gets distracted and may run after smaller animals, if unleashed outdoors.
  • Some jackabees bark loudly, resembling the characteristic howl of a beagle.
